The Crooked River Wetlands project was a groundbreaking solution to increase additional wastewater treatment capacity while creating savings of $58MM by avoiding the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant. The project combined beneficial reuse with the creation and restoration of wetlands, floodplains, riparian areas, and public recreation. The initiative helped reduce wastewater monthly utility rates and wastewater system development charges by 5% for three years consecutively, from $10k to under $2.5k.
The Aquifer Storage & Recovery (ASR) Project was a water management tool that maximized the City's ability to meet peak demands by capitalizing on existing aquifers. The efficient system was designed to collect water in the aquifer during periods of cool temperature, high streamflow, & low demands, enabling the recovery of resources during high utilization. The project successfully reduced the demand for native water sources and eliminated the need to construct new production & storage facilities, saving $40MM in valuable City funding while achieving water goals.
The Barnes Butte property, purchased by the City of Prineville in 2017, is a 460-acre open space that connects the north and south ends of Prineville, offering over 620 acres of public access open space. Barnes Butte Recreation Area is within the city limits and adjacent to residential areas and a school, making it an ideal site for nature-based education.
By acquiring the property, the city gained water rights for 4,000 homes and reduced costs by utilizing the natural environment for parks and trails. The Barnes Butte Master Plan was completed with the help of a $25,000 grant from the National Park Service's RTCA program.
